Land Use 2021: A Place for Biodiversity Offsets

posted May 4, 2021, 6:49 PM by Action for Agriculture   [ updated May 4, 2021, 6:50 PM ]

As you are likely aware, every two years the Alberta Land Institute has hosted a conference dealing with a broad range of issues respecting land use in Alberta. One of the things we noted at Land Use 2014, 2016 and 2018 was keen interest in any topic to do with the economic value of ecosystem services and the intersection of economics and environmental protection. For that reason we intended that Land Use 2020, planned for Banff last May, would focus on biodiversity offsetting. Such offsetting is one policy tool which brings economic value to functional ecosystems. It is being actively debated in Alberta, and many other Canadian jurisdictions.

Unfortunately the Banff conference was postponed due to the Covid pandemic but now we are bringing that content online.  ALI is now pleased to present  Land Use 2021: A Place for Biodiversity Offsets, a web forum series that will examine the nature, opportunities, challenges and issues presented by offsetting for biodiversity.  We hope you will join us Mondays from April 19 to June 14 as we focus on different aspects of the topic.

For those of you new to the subject of biodiversity offsetting, we invite you to view Biodiversity Offsets 101, the recording of a webinar we presented last year.  It should give you all you need to get the most out of the upcoming sessions. We hope you will join us and help advance thinking about innovative land stewardship. ALI will be presenting a Web Forum series on biodiversity offsetting Mondays from April 19 to June 14.

The Forum will bring together some of the world’s top offset scholars, policy-makers and practitioners to discuss the opportunities, challenges and issues associated with offsetting for biodiversity.

We're excited to host you for this Forum. The experts we've assembled represent the best minds, exploring the latest thinking, presenting the current trends and best practices. It's going to be a terrific conversation - we'd love to see you there participating.

And - it's all free.

Thank you to the sponsors who have made this experience happen:

Join us online starting Monday April 19, 2021

2021 is allowing us to reach more and more people virtually. We're embracing the opportunity. We hope you join us.
